“Susquehanna”, +Live+

in my old age, 15+ years after first hearing this song, i can appreciate that some of the lyrics are just meta silliness, even though i thought they were all sorts of deep when i was 18.  but as i listen to all my old +Live+ albums in preparation for seeing them in concert next weekend, i’m also discovering that every song contains at least one snippet of lyrical genius mixed in with the pseudo-mysticism, in addition to almost unfailingly great music.  this song is a great example, because it contains some of my favorite lines ever:

“Although we were very thirsty, I question the oasis.”

“It’s hard to join the dance when you know the song is poisoning everyone.”

they never released a true studio version of this song, and the demo version is crappy quality.  so this is the live version, which is all the better for the passion in it, anyway.  enjoy.

Frank told us there’s a lot of Mulder and Scully in this film. That the character development is the heart of the film. Is that how you see it?

DUCHOVNY: That’s how I saw the show. The fact was that on any particular show you didn’t have to go for it because it was written that way. This probably has more self conscious relationship stuff in it than most of the shows.

ANDERSON: Yeah…

Me: Yeah!!!!!

David Duchovny: It was always my hope that we would get to do one of these every five or six years. That’s exactly how long ago it’s been since the show. When I was getting off the television show I was never like, “Screw the television show, screw this character, screw you.” I love the show, I love working with Gillian, I love Chris, I love the characters. If we can pull that off that would be great. And if not I’m perfectly happy with the amount of work we’ve done as Mulder and Scully. We’ve done a lot. In a way, I felt like this was win-win. If it continues on, fantastic. If it goes away, we did a lot.

just something about this song that won’t let go of me…
If this is the moment I stand here on my own,
If this is my rite of passage that somehow leads me home,
I might be afraid
But it’s my turn to be brave.

from Newsweek's Oscar roundtable

James McAvoy: I'm fascinated by the way you work, Daniel.

Angelina Jolie: Your process is just amazing. You are just so brilliant. We all look to you as this mad genius, like, "He must have the most difficult time because of the work that comes out of him."

George Clooney: OK, let's get it out right now. All actors bow to this fucker right here. And it makes us crazy when he goes, "Yeah, and then I went and I was a cobbler for a year." He made shoes for a year! You're amazing, and you just kill it for the rest of us.

Daniel Day-Lewis: Thank you, George.

George Clooney: Yeah, whatever.
